I am a native of the island of Trinidad and Tobago, but I moved to the United States when I was twelve years old. I graduated from Forest Lake Academy in Apopka, FL with Highest Honors and I am now a student at Oakwood University working to obtain a B. S. in Dietetics with a minor in Art. I have had a passion for Art ever since I was a little girl and wanted to major in Art but realized that I was called to the field of Dietetics in my junior year of high school. My interest in nutrition began after my mother began attending a medical missionary program at a local SDA Church and every day she would come home and tell my dad and I what she learned in the program. My dad was also very instrumental in sparking my interest in nutrition. At first, I was reluctant to value the information my mom shared with me, but I began to read her medical missionary books, one of them being The Natural Remedies Encyclopedia by M.D. Vance H. Ferrell and Harold M. Cherne, and I watched a documentary about the correlation between diet and disease called Forks Over Knives and my eyes were opened to the world of health and nutrition.
I am desirous to make an impact in health and nutrition, and in peoples’ lives. I understand that within recent years, more people have become overwhelmed with the influx of treatable diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and some cancers and they are often discouraged by their condition. Therefore, I would like to help such persons bring their ailments under control and ultimately cured. For this reason, I am interested in pursuing a career in Clinical Dietetics. Currently, my goal is to graduate from Oakwood University, complete a dietetic internship with the United States Veteran Affairs and pass the exam to become a Registered Dietitian. My long term goals include creating a graphic presentation that illustrates the importance of healthy eating incorporated with the biblical reasons for living a healthy lifestyle. I want to have a garden and possibly a small farm in my backyard, and I would like to make and sell handmade body care products. Overall, I want to show my patients the importance of living a healthy, holistic lifestyle.
I volunteer with an organization called The National Association for the Prevention of Starvation (NAPS), a non-profit volunteer relief organization, which aims to prevent both physical and spiritual starvation. I serve on the Food Committee of this organization. I am a member of the Oakwood University Student Nutrition Awareness Club (SNAC), Oakwood University Prophecy Club, and Art Club. I am also a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Upon learning about all of the toxins loaded in cosmetic products, I thought about someday using only naturally made products and having a garden in my backyard. When I went to Oakwood University, I met three other young ladies with the same interests and intentions so the four of us have started something called The Natural Project where we desire to learn how to take care of our bodies naturally and educate others on how to do the same.
I am pursuing a minor in Art because art has always been my passion, and I will be able to increase my knowledge and develop my skills in this area. A minor in art will be useful in the field of dietetics in creating educational materials like flyers, brochures, promotional videos, PowerPoints, etc. It will also give me great pleasure to paint pictures of fruits and vegetable to promote healthy eating. I have learned how to draw, I enjoy painting, I recently learned how to crochet, and I aspire to learn even more crafts. I am also certified in CPR.
All in all, I am a well-rounded individual who desires to learn much about nutrition and wellness and impart what I have learned to the people around me, while showing them the relation between healthy living and godly living.
